Abstract

802,118. Direct injection engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Feb. 7, 1957 [Feb. 10, 1956], No. 4279/57. Class 7(3) A fuel injector 15 injects one jet 16 into a turbulence chamber 13 in the cylinder head and a second jet 17 along the wall of a connecting passage 14 substantially tangentially into the main combustion chamber 11 in the piston so as to impinge upon and be guided around the wall thereof. The chamber 13 is kept warm by poor cooling or insulation and may be provided with an incandescent igniter 18 for starting whilst the main chamber 11 is cooled as efficiently as possible. The jets 16, 17 may be injected at different times and may supply different amounts of fuel, and the jet 17 is injected in the direction of rotation of the air in chamber 11.
