Abstract

739,996. Stuffing-boxes. WILSON, W. R. July 5,1954, No. 19586/54. Class 122 (5). In a stuffing-box arrangement an axially movable sleeve 2, 3 extends into and divides the packing space between the shaft and the box housing 1 into two concentric annular spaces and the packing is compressed between a radial flange at the inner end of the sleeve and two concentric cylindrical portions of the gland follower 6, 7. The sleeve is externally screwed and slotted at its outer portion to provide projections which pass through corresponding slots in the gland follower and are engaged by a nut 4 which is tightened to compress the packing.. Lantern rings 9, 10, through which lubricant may be supplied are provided, and the sleeve, whose outer end is protected by a nut 5, is formed in two detachable parts 2 and 3 to facilitate removal and insertion of the packing.
