Abstract
717,306. Surgical forceps. WEIHMANN, M. Sept. 30, 1952 [Oct. 5, 1951], No. 24407/52. Class 81(2) An instrument for enucleating the eyeball comprises a pair of forceps 10 having gripping jaws 11, 12, one of which, 12, has a rounded end 13 extending the full width of both jaws. Both jaws are of channelled form and the lower one 12 accommodates a sliding blade 14 provided with a handle. The blade slides longitudinally on a stud 21 attached to one of the forceps arms and has a narrow section extending within the channel of jaw 12, so as not to protrude above the gripping surface thereof, and. at the further end, it is curved round to form a broader cutting projection 25 which. as the blade is drawn towards the right, passes along the space between the two 'jaws 11, 12. The jaws are preferably made in arcuate form, in a plane perpendicular to the drawing, so that they may be passed around the back of the eyeball until they can grip the optic nerve. The blade is then drawn along to cut the nerve but this remains gripped by the jaws, so preventing haemorrhage.
