1283614 Dilators INSTITUT SERDECHNO-SOSUDISTOI KHIRURGII IMENI A N BAKULEVA and UNIVERSITET DRUZHBY NARODOV IMENI PATRISA LUMUMBY 20 Dec 1969 62194/69 Heading A5R A dilator for use in heart surgery comprises a working head 1 having a pair of trough shaped jaws 4, 5, an articulated linkage 6 for actuating the jaws, having a first pair of arms 7, 8 pivotally attached at one of their ends 14, 15 to the front of the jaws and another pair of arms 9, 10 whose ends 19, 20 are slidable along the lateral surfaces of the jaws, the jaws being openable by a flexible linkage 24 passing through a flexible cable 2, and a pair of elastic guard members 23 attached at one of their ends to the cable 2, and at the other to the rear ends of the jaws. The arms 7, 8 are pivotally attached at their other ends 11, 12 to a sleeve 13 attached to the end of cable 2, and arms 9, 10 are pivotally attached to a slide 16 at their ends 17, 18, to which slide is attached the linkage 24. The guard members 23 may be coil springs. Linkage 24 is moved through the cable 2 by a hand-operated drive (3) Fig. 1 (not shown) consisting of two pivoted handles (25) and (26) attached to the cable 2 and linkage 24 respectively, and provided with return springs (30) and an indicator (29) of the degree of opening of the jaws. Arms 9, 10 of the articulated linkage 6 may each consist of a twin pair of members (Fig. 3, not shown) arranged so as to be symmetrical about the plane in which the jaws lie.
