Abstract

703,554. Load-handling appliances. THORP, E. A., and HARVEY, R. W. B. Dec. 14, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1950], No. 30517/50. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4) A crane in which the jib is pivoted about a movable fulcrum so as to give a lift in a substantially vertical straight line is provided with a variable drive which gives a substantially constant velocity ratio to lift, i.e. for any given rate of power input the rate of lift is substantially constant. The jib a, b, c is connected to links g and h pivoted to a self propelled carriage d, so that on raising the jib, the load moves in a substantially vertical path, the rate of ascent being constant for a given power input. The lift is effected by a multi-telescopic ram k pivoted at 1 to the carriage and supplied with fluid from a prime mover r. The fluid passes to a pipe s to a non-return valve to a pipe q connected to the ram and returns along pipe u to a tank w. The lift may otherwise be effected by gearing connected to the pivot j.
