Abstract

829,828. Coil-handling devices. HEPPENSTALL CO. Aug. 23, 1956 [April 16, 1956], No. 25757/56. Class 78 (4). A coil-handling device comprises a pair of gripping members 19, 20, Fig. 1, mounted on an arcuate rack member 12 pivoted at 77 to a pair of links 13 which are themselves pivoted at 40 on the axis of a pinion 37 engaging the rack member and supported beneath a control head 11. The gripper 20 may be moved relatively to the gripper 19 by hydraulic pressure supplied by a pump 46, Fig. 4, driven by an electric motor 44, and while the device is supported from a crane by a shackle 14 the coil may be moved from a vertical to a horizontal position (as in Fig. 4) by a reversible fluid motor 32, also supplied from the pump 46, which motor drives the pinion 37 through a worm reduction gear. The two operations may be independently and remotely controlled. The shackle 14 is slidable on members 22 of the control head, and pistons 26, Fig. 8, attached to the shackle engage in bores 25 which communicate with the control cyilnder of the gripper 20, so that the weight of the load increases the gripping pressure.
