Abstract

Relief patterns are produced on textile fabrics by first impregnating, either locally or uniformly, with a precipitating agent for a natural or synthetic resin or components thereof or for rubber latex, synthetic rubber or a cellulose derivative, which latter substance is subsequently applied, together with a dispersing agent, as an aqueous dispersion, the dispersion, containing also pigments and dyes, e.g. substantive and acetate dyes, being applied uniformly or locally, as by printing with deeply-engraved printing rollers, according to whether the precipitating agent is applied locally or uniformly respectively. The precipitated material may be an acrylic or methacrylic resin, a vinyl resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl butyral and polystyrol, a chlorinated rubber lacquer, nitrocellulose, if desired modified with alkyd or aminoaldehyde ether resins, or acetyl cellulose. Specified precipitating agents, which are preferably anionic if the dispersing agent is cationic and vice versa, are salts of polyvalent metals, such as aluminium sulphate, chloride and acetate, lead acetate, chromium chloride, iron chloride and sulphate, barium chloride, calcium chloride and zinc chloride and sulphate, as well as alumina, phosphotungstic acid, ferrocyanides, perchloric acid and aromatic sulphonic acids. Fabrics of vegetable, animal and fully synthetic fibres, e.g. of cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives and superpolyamide fibres may be treated. To the dispersion fillers, such as flock fibres, metal powders, titanium white and barium sulphate may be added. The thickness of the deposit may be varied by local variation of the quantity of precipitating agent applied. The deposits may be grained by boiling in soap/soda solution, and parchmentizing may be effected by treatment with sulphuric acid, followed by mercerizing with caustic soda solution. Numerous examples are given, in one of which the precipitating agent for a polyacrylic resin dispersion is a cationic condensate from formaldehyde, urea and guanidine. The dispersing agents employed in the examples are oleic acid, triethanolamine, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, morpholine and soap.
