Abstract

Textile material formed predominantly of regenerated cellulose is stabilized with respect to dimensional shrinkage and is rendered resistant to wrinkling, crushing and creasing without impairing its original softness, by treating it with an aqueous solution containing the equivalent of 15-120 c.c. of 30 per cent by weight glyoxal solution and 0.125 to 4 grams of an acidic catalyst and 12-50 grams in all of one or more amino-aldehyde water-dispersible thermosetting resinous condensation products per litre of treating solution, and baking the treated textile material at 212-350 DEG F. for 40-2 minutes so as to effect a reaction between the glyoxal and the fibres of the material. A soft hand or feel may be imparted to the material by including in the treating bath a cation-active softener. The textile material may be in the form of fibres, yarns, fabrics or garments. The acidic catalyst may be oxalic acid, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate, or ammonium nitrate. In an example, viscose rayon fabric is impregnated with a solution in water of glyoxal with oxalic acid and urea-formaldehyde condensed to a stage such that it is completely dispersible in water but not sufficiently soluble to produce a clear solution. The fabric is squeezed, dried on a tenter frame and then cured in a hot oven. In other examples, fabric of viscose and cellulose acetate, and fabric of viscose and casein fibres, are subjected to the treatment. Urea-formaldehyde, a urea - butyl - urea - formaldehyde p co-condensation product, or melamine-formaldehyde is used as the thermosetting resinous product. Mixtures of these compounds may be used. In another example, the impregnating solution contains a quaternary ammonium compound, octadecyl oxymethyl pyridinium chloride. The cation-active substance may be a quinolinium, or acridinium compound. It may be the salt of a strong or weak acid, e.g. hydrochloric, acetic or formic acid. The treatment may be applied to viscose, cuprammonium and completely saponified cellulose acetate materials. It is also applicable to materials containing regenerated cellulose and other fibres, e.g. viscose and cellulose acetate, casein, soyabean protein, peanut protein, wool or cotton. Specification 585,679 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of cotton and other textile materials. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
