Abstract

Cellulose ester or ether textile materials are coloured by steaming after impregnating them with a preparation containing a diazo-amino compound, an enolic coupling component, and an organic base volatile in steam, in a liquid medium which, when including the organic base, is a swelling agent for the cellulose derivative. The organic base may be of the type NR1R2R3 in which R1 is hydroxyalkl and R2 and R3 are hydrogen, hydroxyalkyl or alkyl, e.g. hydroxyethyl-diethylamine. As liquid media there may be used aqueous solutions of alcohols, ketones, esters or ethers including compounds containing two or more polar groups in the molecule, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl alcohols, acetone, methylethylketone, diacetone alcohol, glycol monoacetate, glycerol diacetate, glycol monomethyl and monoethyl ethers, ethyl lactate, ethylene and propylene chlorohydrins, methylene ethylene ether, diethylene glycol, methyl glycol acetate and thiodiglycol. The preparations may also contain a thiocyanate. The textile material may be impregnated by padding or printing and a thickener such as methyl cellulose may be present. In an example, cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a paste containing diazotized 4-chloro-2-aminotoluene stabilized with sarcosine, the orthotoluidide of 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, diethylaminoethanol or triethanolamine, water, methyl cellulose, sodium thiocyanate and methylated spirit, dried and steamed at 225 DEG F. The Specification refers to many other suitable diazoamino compounds and enolic coupling components. Specification 696,134 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
