Abstract

Textile materials of cellulose esters of organic acids are coloured by treatment with a solution of a dye in a mixture of water, a monohydric alcohol containing up to 5 carbon atoms, an inorganic thiocyanate which is a swelling agent for the cellulose ester, and a small proportion of an alkali metal hydroxide. The dyestuffs used may be acid dyes, or insoluble dyes of the kind which dye cellulose acetate from aqueous dispersions. Preferably the solution contains at least 60 per cent of alcohol, 1 to 3 per p cent of the thiocyanate and up to 4 per cent of alkali metal hydroxide. In an example, cellulose acetate fabric is impregnated with a dyebath containing sodium thiocyanate, sodium hydroxide, Celliton Blue AF, ethyl alcohol and water, washed and dried.
