Abstract
Magnesium or magnesium-base alloys are coated with zinc by treating them with an aqueous alkaline solution having a pH of 8-11 formed by dissolving in water an alkali metal pyrophosphate and the acetate, borate, bromide, chloride, cyanide, fluoride or sulphate of zinc. Sodium or ferric fluoride or ferric oxalate may also be present. The zinc-coated surface may be used as a base for electroplating, e.g. with silver, gold, copper, cadmium or tin, and further metallic coatings, e.g. cadmium, chromium, nickel, silver or zinc, may follow. Prior to coating the surface may be cleaned with acetic or hydrochloric acid solutions or a solution of aluminium chloride.
