Abstract
923,579. Electro-plating aluminium. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 13, 1959 [June 4, 1958], No. 16440/59. Class 41. Aluminium and alloys thereof are prepared for electroplating with silver or other metals by (1) cleaning by hot alkali hydroxide bath, (2) rinsing and dipping in an alkaline solution of zinc and alkali cyanides to give a flash zinc coating, (3) passing a current in the same solution to give a thin electro-plate of zinc. The alkali etch solution may include potassium tartrate, which dissolves any magnesium and manganese hydroxides present, and may be followed by a nitric acid dip. The plating solution may include sodium sulphide or carbonate, or a very little silver cyanide with polyvinyl alcohol. Details of relative concentrations and their effects are given. The final coating may be Ag, Cu, Cd, brass or tin. Specification 747,871 is referred to.
