Abstract
A white cast iron, especially suitable for annealing, contains hypereutectic carbon in the form of nodular graphite and is produced by addition of cerium to a hypereutectic iron which on casting gives an iron containing not more than 0.02 per cent of sulphur and less than 0.5 per cent of phosphorus. After the addition of cerium and immediately prior to casting, a graphitising inoculant such as ferro-silicon, calcium silicide or graphite may be added to the metal. The quantity of cerium added may for example be up to 0.2 per cent. The production of a cast iron of the following analysis is referred to: C 3.66 per cent, Si 2.96 per cent, Mn 0.60 per cent, S 0.017 per cent, P 0.044 per cent, Ce 0.051 per cent.
