Abstract
A process for the production of cast iron which is hypereutectic in relation to carbon content and in which the free carbon is wholly or predominantly in the form of nodular graphite comprises the addition of both magnesium and cerium (other than an alloy of copper, magnesium and mischmetall) to a molten hypereutectic iron, which when cast gives a grey iron. The treated iron should contain not less than 0.005 per cent. of magnesium and not less than 0.001 per cent. of cerium, the total of the two metals being at least 0.04 per cent. The cast iron may also contain copper up to 8.0 per cent., nickel up to 30.0 per cent., silicon up to 7.0 per cent., phosphorus up to 1.5 per cent., manganese up to 4.0 per cent., molybdenum up to 2.0 per cent., chromium up to 4.0 per cent., sulphur up to 0.3 per cent. The magnesium and cerium may be added separately in either order, preferably magnesium first, as such or in the form of alloys with iron, nickel or copper followed by an inoculant such as ferrosilicon. Alternatively they may be added together in the form of an alloy which may also contain the inoculant, e.g. as an alloy of magnesium, cerium and silicon with iron or nickel. A suitable alloy has the composition Mg 15 per cent., Ce 4 per cent., La and other rare earth metals 4 per cent., C 5.1 per cent., Ni 75.5 per cent. Specification 630,070 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 645,862 and 649,946.
