Abstract

601,883. Printing-machines. LARSEN, C. E. Oct. 10, 1945, Nos. 26397 and 26398. Convention dates, Sept. 27, 1941, and March 18, 1942. [Class 100(ii)] Damping apparatus for printing-machines is constructed with supply rollers which are divided into sections so that the water - applying rollers have varying actions in different sections of the rollers so as to adapt the damping effect to the nature of the design. The invention may be applied to a machine in which damping and inking rollers are combined in one arrangement so that the water is actually applied by one of the inking-rollers. The supply roller may take the form of a roller formed with a number of annular grooves, or as shown in Fig. 2 may be built up of a number of discs 14 keyed to a shaft 15, or secured thereto by screws. As shown in Fig: 4, a number of interchangeable narrow rolls 20 contact a duct roller 26 and a roller 27 which engages an axially reciprocating supply roller 28. As shown in Fig. 6, a number of independently narrow rolls 20 are detachably secured to an oscillating bar 22 by means of a frame 21 having a pivoted and adjustable connection to a frame 29 consisting of a screw 31 and spring 32. The frames 21 oscillate so as to move the rollers 20 into and out of contact with the roller 27 but the roll 23, with which the roll 20 contacts, is not moved out of contact with the water 24. In further modifications rolls 20 may be spring-mounted in slots in oscillating frames, or may be mounted in an oscillating frame formed of two parts which may be readily disconnected. In a further modification, Fig. 9, rolls 20 oscillate into contact with a roll 27, while maintaining contact with water in the fountain 24, and the frames 21- are oscillated through an adjustable spring connection 32 with the operating shaft 22.
