836,615. Marking paper during manufacture. SMITH PAPER MILLS Ltd., H. Dec. 21, 1956, No.39062/56.. Class 96. Paper is marked by printing, compressing the fibres, or by embossing the web, e.g. at a wet press 51 of a paper-making machine, by wheels 5 with circumferential rubber marking- rings which are pressed by pneumatic cylinders 36 &c. into contact with the paper web as it travels about the upper press roll 52. The marking-roll assembly can be moved clear of the roll 52 by a further pneumatic cylinder (not shown in Fig. 1) &c Provision is made at 27 for adjusting the angles of the axes of the marking-wheels 5 so that they hear correctly on the paper web. Air for the pneumatic cylinders 36 is preferably passed through a rotary hollow shaft 6 on which the marking- wheel assembly is mounted.
