Abstract

596,636. Air-screws. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Jan. 31, 1940, No. 1926. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1939. [Class 114] A moulded screw-propeller blade is constituted by inorganic and artificial filaments disposed parallel to one another and embedded in a binder, the filaments being composed of bundles or twists of fine fibres having individually a diameter of less than 10 microns and preferably of from 4 to 5 microns. The fibres may be of glass, silica or metal and the binder be a synthetic resin having a modulus of elasticity not greater than that of the filaments. The proportion by volume of the filaments is higher adjacent the hub than towards the tip and averages at least 30 per cent. The filaments may be straight and lie along the length of the blade or be disposed along the contour thereof and may be corded, twisted, plaited or' cabled or be parallel or be woven and a small portion be disposed haphazard in the blade. The reinforcement may include filaments of different kinds and their surfaces may be roughened, or coated, or lubricated.
