Abstract

Rigid moulded articles of high tensile strength comprise an organic binder and at least 30 per cent by volume of artificial inorganic threads formed of one or more fibres having a diameter less than 10 microns, the threads being arranged for the most part in the same direction. The fibres may be of glass, silica, quartz or metal and the binder may be natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic resins of the phenol-, cresol-, or urea-formaldehyde, alkyd or polyvinyl types. Preferably the modulus of elasticity of the binder is less than or equal to that of the fibres. The articles may be formed by moulding under pressure a mixture of fibres and binder or by impregnating the formed fibrous reinforcement and subjecting to pressure. The threads may be of parallel, twisted, braided, or cabled fibres, which may have been roughened by chemical action or by coating.
