Abstract
544,011. Electric soldering irons. SCOTT, W. Sept. 23, 1940, 14461. [Class 39 (iii)] A soldering iron comprises a flat steel strip 2 bent into U-shape to form a handle and covered by insulation 3. One end 5 is riveted at 6, through insulating bushes, to a copper strip 7 to which the bit 8 is attached by screws. The other limb of the handle carries a socket 17 containing an adjustable carbon rod 18. Current supply leads are connected at 11, 20 and the circuit completed by hand grip on the handle, so that current passes through the strip 7 to heat it. The parts 7, 8 may be made in one piece. Alternatively, the handle may be straight and the holder 17 carried by a resilient strip secured to the handle and operated by thumb pressure. The appliance is operated by a low voltage supply obtained from a step-down transformer.
