Abstract

538,816. Washing machines; doors and closures. UNITED STATES HOFFMAN MACHINERY CORPORATION. April 2, 1940, No. 5938. Convention date, May 5, 1939. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] The charging &c. opening in a washing &c. machine cylinder is closed by a door supported on a carriage movable on circumferential tracks on the cylinder, and connected with a counterweight, to expose or close the opening, and manual screws are provided on the carriage for supporting and for pressing the door against the sides of the opening. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the door 15 is supported by a screw 26 from a carriage 16 secured to circumferential plates 19 and movable, when the screw is released, below circumferential retaining bands 21 secured to stiffening bands 14 on the cylinder 10. The bands 19 carry a counterweight for the door and carriage positioned diametrically opposite thereto so that the door is balanced in all positions of displacement. The door is fitted with a packing ring 6 which is pressed against the seating by means of the screw 26 against the reaction between the plates 19, 21. When the door is released by the screw the pressure between the plates 19, 21 is relieved and the carriage can then be moved, this being facilitated by rollers 22 on the carriage running on the bars 21. In a modification, the screw is replaced by a spindle 45, Fig. 6, mounted in the carriage 116 and rockable by a handle 47 with locking catch, the spindle having eccentric ends by which it operates through links to move the doors 115 towards and from its seating.
