Abstract
488,296. Rotary furnaces for carbides &c. ZOTOS, G. Feb. 9, 1937, No. 3841.. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1936. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In the manufacture of carbides and other oxidizable materials in a furnace which is rotated at such a speed that the charge distributes itself uniformly over the inner periphery, an axial combustion zone is established in the furnace and between this zone and the charge a non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained. In the apparatus shown, air or oxygen is injected through the axial nozzle 9, and around this carbon monoxide, in excess of that necessary for combustion, is supplied through the conduit 7. The products of combustion are regenerated in the coal or coke-filled stove 10, and are returned through the conduit 8, circulation being assisted by gas jets 12, 13. Surplus gases are taken off through 15 and used for the production of oxygen. The process may be continuous or intermittent, and in the latter case two furnaces are employed, one of which is being charged and preheated while the other is in active operation. Coal dust may be used as fuel instead of or in addition to carbon monoxide, and during the later stages of the process carbon may be supplied to form a protective layer on the charge.
