Abstract
473,887. Driving-gear. HIRONAKA, Y., and TSUNEDA, K. April 15, 1936, No. 10864. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] The pressure of combustion gases taken from the engine cylinder is utilized to vary the compression ratio by altering the dead-centre position of the piston. This position may be altered (1) by varying the distance between the axis of the piston-pin and the piston-head, (2) by varying the length of the piston rod, or (3) by mounting the crank-shaft in an eccentric bearing. As shown, an eccentric sleeve 3 loosely mounted on a gudgeon pin 2 is embraced by an eccentric strap on the connecting-rod 5. A worm-wheel 4 on the sleeve 3 but concentric with the pin 2 is rotated to adjust the piston by a worm 6 fixed on a square shaft 7 slidable through a pinion 8 engaging a rack 10 terminating in a plunger 12 working in a cylinder 11. When the explosion pressure becomes excessive, a valve 15 opens, gas passes via a conduit 16 to a chamber 17 so as to open a valve 18, enter the cylinder 11 and depress the plunger against the action of a spring 13, whereby the piston is lowered and the compression ratio is reduced. On fall of pressure, the valves 15 and 18 are closed, and the spring 13 returns the plunger to normal position, the gas passing to the atmosphere or to an inlet manifold 20.
