Abstract

298,257. Evans, A. F. June 27, 1927. Actuating by eccentric and lever; timing devices; reciprocating-cylinder pumps; regulating delivery by bye-passes; valves, arrangement of. -A pump for delivering fuel to an internal-combustion engine comprises a plunger 65 and a cylinder 51 reciprocated in opposite phases by eccentrics 79, 86 and levers 72 which are pivoted on arms 74, 83 mounted on eccentric 75. The cylinder has inlet ports 53 adapted to be closed by the plunger, and bye-pass ports 52 the opening of which is controlled by a sleeve 54. Delivery to the engine takes place between the closing of the ports 53 and the opening of the ports 52. The position of the sleeve 54 on the cylinder 51 may be adjusted by either of two levers 40, 42 through eccentrics 60, 56, and lever 55. The moment at which delivery begins and ends may be adjusted by turning shaft 76 carrying the eccentrics 75, 84, thereby lowering the plunger and raising the cylinder 51. The injection valve 38, Fig. 8, is streamlined and is held to its seat 94 by an internal spring 97. Helical &c. grooves 95 are provided for the passage of the fuel. In another form, the spring 97 is above the valve and engages a shoulder on the valve stem. The plunger may be shaped as in Fig. 4 and the ports 52 as in Fig. 6. Specifications 7146/90, 7241/92, [both in Class 7, Air and gas engines]; 10366/13; and 133,719, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], are referred to.
