Abstract

601,217. Valves. ASPIN, F. M. July 20, 1944, No. 13919. [Class 7 (vi)] In a rotary valve assembly comprising a housing 12 and a rotary valve member 14, which have complementary tapered bearing and gas-sealing surfaces 13, the valve member 'having a through passage 15 forming substantially the whole combustion volume of the engine when the piston is at top dead centre and an end area exposed to the fluctuating fluid pressure against which it functions as a valve and in which the rotary valve member is formed with a second end area directed oppositely to the first and with a duct 23 leading directly from the through passage to a space 22 in the valve housing above said second end area so that there will exist in such space a pressure which tends to counterbalance that in the through passage and which will vary proportionally with fluctuations in the pressure acting on the exposed end area of the rotary valve member, the second end area is close to the bearing and gas-sealing surfaces of the valve, the pressure space 22 above it being of small volume, whilst the duct 23 leading thereto is short and of small diameter so that it does not appreciably reduce the compression ratio of the engine but produces a substantial time lag in the response of the counterbalancing pressure on the second end area to variations in the pressure in the through passage. The area subject to upward pressure is represented by area 27 of Fig. 3, and that subject to downward pressure by areas 28 and 29 of Fig. 2. In a modification, the rotary valve is driven from below so that the upper end area is not obstructed by a valve stem. A further modification has the upper end area formed on the upper face of a flange provided on the lower end of the rotary valve. Two or more flow passages may be provided in the valve instead of the one shown. Specifications 463,412 and 564,850 are referred to.
