[Class 52 (ii)] In a drop-side cot, the sliding side rail is made in two longitudinally divided parts hinged together to fold one upon the other so as to reduce the height of the side rail when in the dropped position. The dropside comprises two parts, A, B, Fig. 1, sliding on rods 11 secured to the head and foot panels or rails of the cot. The top and bottom bars 13, 13<a> of the lower part B are formed with holes through which the rods 11 pass, the upper bar 13 being provided with studs 14 which engage, preferably automatically, with retaining catches 15 on the end posts comprising pivoted hook-shaped members 17, Fig. 4 provided with tongues 17<a> for manual operation to release the side. The top part A of the side is secured to the part B by hinges 18, Fig. 1, so as to fold downwardly on the part B, and the top rail of the part A is provided with vertical slots 12<c>, Fig. 9, in which the rods 11 lie when the top part is raised. Pivoted catches 19 are provided to engage the rods 11 to retain the part A in the vertical position ; these catches are spring-controlled and can be operated to release the side by pressing on a finger-piece 19b. With the sliding side dropped and folded, the cot may be used as a settee.
