1 Claim.
`This invention relates to cribs and the object is to provide an improved construction of crib having provision for shifting the bed proper to facilitate the care of the child.
My invention will be well understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative' embodiment thereof shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Fig. l is a perspective view of a crib embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts broken away showing the parts in another position of adjustment;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in a still different position; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail on an enlarged scale.
It is well known that it is desirable that an infant should not lie flat on his back while feeding. I therefore provide a crib in which the bed may readily be bodily tilted even while the child reclines thereon and restored to its original position when desired. Referring to the drawings, I have there shown a crib of the drop-side type embodying the end members `t and 8, of which the corner posts form a part, a side l extending between the corner posts at the further side of the crib and a spacing stretcher l2 at the nearer side inset from the plane of Vthe corner post to permit the movement of the drop side I4 which is similar to the side l0 but is vertically movable along the guides I6 projecting inwardly from the corner post. The drop side may either rest in the lowered position shown in Fig. 1 or may be raised to an elevation like that of the side I0, in which position it is sustained by the engagement of the catches I8 with latch 20.
The bed or bed bottom 22 may be of any suitable or usual spring construction organized on a suitable frame and supports the mattress 24 or similar bedding. In the normal position the bed is supported from the end members 6 and 8 in the position of Fig. 1 by means of suitable brackets such as those shown at 26 at the lefthand end of Fig. 3. The right-hand end of Fig. 1 may be considered the head of the crib and the construction which I am about to describe provides for lifting the same even although the child is resting on the bed without any disturbance or dismantling, the foot of the bed turning on its supports 26. Herein I show brackets 28 extending inwardly from the two corner posts at the head, and interposed between these brackets and the overlying side rails of the bed 22 are toggles 3U. The toggles may be straightened to or slightly beyond dead center where they are checked by the stops 32 (Fig. 2) and will raise and support the head of the bed to the position of Fig. 2. The child will then rest in an inclined position ready for his bottle. To straighten the toggles the lower links thereof may be extended 5 downwardly below the brackets 28 and joined to form the bail-like handle 34 which is received within the periphery of the crib enclosure yet is readily accessible at the end of the crib between the legs at that end for actuation, for instance, by the pressure of the foot, to raise the head of the bed from the position of Fig. 1 to the position of Fig. 2.
In the case of very small babies the high sides are not necessary and at various times, even with the provision of the drop side as shown, are somewhat of an inconvenience to the mother in tending the child. I therefore provide means for supporting the entire bed in a horizontal position at the elevation of the head or right-hand end in Fig. 2 when desired. This adjustment of the left-hand end may be a quasi permanent adjustment, and herein the corner posts of the end piece 8 are provided with studs 36 while the end rail of the bed frame 22 may be provided with 25 hooks 38 normally folding under the same but adapted to be swung outwardly to the full line position of Fig. 4 to engage over the studs 36 to 'support the left-hand end of the bed, as shown in Fig. 3, at the same elevation as that at which the right-hand end is supported by the straightened toggles. In this position the top of the mattress may be substantially at the level of the top of the drop side I4 in its lowered position, as clearly seen in Fig. 3. The connection of the hooks 38 with the studs 36 is a loose one, permitting a swinging movement of the bed, and permits a fourth position not illustrated in which the left-hand end of the bed, which may now bev considered the head, is at the elevation shown in 40 Fig. 3 while the right-hand end may be lowered by collapsing the toggle. The bed then takes an inclined position at the opposite inclination from Fig. 2 providing for feeding of the child. Thus in the case of a very yound child the position of Fig. 3 may be considered a normal position and provision is made for lowering the foot of the bed. When the child grows older, the position of Fig. l may be considered the normal position and the head of the bed is then elevated to the position of Fig. 2, the adjustment in either case being effected simply and securely by operation of the handle 34.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing 10 ing and supporting an end of the bed at a higher elevation comprising brackets on the enclosure beneath the same at either side, toggles between said brackets and an end of the bed movable to a locked position over dead center, the lower links of the toggles being continued and. joined as a bail-like handle received Within the periphery of the enclosure and accessible for manipulation from an end of the crib.
