Bev 1t known that I, STANLEY CoRY'roN HUGH ROBERTS, -a subject of the King ofl GreatBritain, and resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Sound-ReproducingMechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to .gramoyphoncs and has for its object to effect animprove- 'ment in the casing and structure of such instruments whereby a greater .portablhty and a greater volume of sound areobtained than is usual with such instruments, and their cost of manufacture reduced.
The invention comprises a gramophone of the kind 'operatively' mounted in a box, cabinet or casing wherein the amplifying horn is arranged within the hinged lid with,

The lid 2ris hinged to the back-wall of the case at 3 .and is deeper at'the front than at the back, the adjacent edges of the lid and cover at their sides being of such'ian inclination that when the lid is closed the top and bottom of the case will be parallel to one another. v i t v The amplifyinghorn is of rectangular cross section and is built in the lid of the casewith' the large open end of the horn extending over .thewhole of the front of together withone side 9 of it form two of the sides of the horn, the other two sides being formed by the divisions or partitions 4 and 5, 4 being` arranged -diagonally in the lid of--the case and in 5 the plane of the lower 4edges of the lid and provided at its rear portion with a hole 6 adapted-when the lid is closed-to register with the open end of thetone arm which 'is secured in the case on a bearing bracket l0. A. flexible Washer 30 is fixed around the top of the opening in the bracket 10 so that when `the lid is closed it will form a sound proof joint between the rim 11 of thehorn inlet 6.and the opening in the bracket 10 above the tone arm outlet.
The tone arm terminates in a vertical portion 14 adapted to form a vertical pivot providedwith projecting portions or pins 15 fitting in an annular groove 16 Vin the bearing bracket 10 so as to form a vertical bearing or pivot about lWhich the tone arm 13 can lmove horizontally. The bearing bracket 10 is formed on' a partition 21 constructed of light metal' and supports the tone arm the desired distance above the record 17 which is' mounted on a tabley 18 driven by a motor in the usual4 manner.- The horizontal pivot about which. thetone arm 13 can be lifted to raise thestylusfrom the record, in the example shown, consists of pins or tunnions 15 extending from the vertlcal portion 14 of the tone arm 13, into and adapted to be carried round in the groove 16 and so ,form also 'the vertical pivot of the tone arm.
The horizontal partition 21 on the underside of which the motorl is secured is constructed of light metal and provided with enlarged openings shown in dotted lines, and
is provided with legs or supports 31,.'and stops 32 on which the lid 2 rests when closed. rllie spindle of the motor extends through one of the openings in the partition 21 so as to support the record carrier or table 18 above it.
In order to protect the stylus and sound box from injury while the casingA is being carried or handled, a hood 20 is rovided on the tone arm 13. This hook can e placed on a bracket 26 on the casing, when the tone arm is tu rued back when not required for use, and the bracket 26 is arranged at such a distance from the lid that the stylus and the sound box will be held from engagement with any portion of the casing during carriage. The space below the framing partition 21 is designed as a store for records 22, and the front portion 23 of the case is hinged to the bottom of the case and is of such a size that when folded against the front of the case it will cover the large open end of the amplitying horn, and is provided with any suitable fastening device 24 and a handle 25 whereby the case can be carried when the lid 2 is closed and the fastening device 24 secured.
The gramophone is started in the usual way after the front portion 23 has been lowered and the lid also lowered to bring the hole 6 of the amplifying horn in register with the upright outlet of the tone arm. When only a modified tone is required the lid is raised, and when it is desired to use the amplifying horn when the lid of the case is open, the inlet of the amplifying horn and the outlet of the tone arm are connected by means of a flexible or telescopic pipe connection.
.Also when the gramophone is operated with the lid 2 closed, any desired degree of modification of the sound reproduced can be obtained by varying the amount of opening said cover, a record carrier rotatably mounted in said cabinet body, a tone arm, a standard at one back corner of the cabinet for supporting said tone arm sothat it may conand open at the front, an. amplifying horn in A nect with the inlet to the horn, one side of said horn being formed by one side' of the cover near said inlet, while the opposite'side of said horn extends diagonally across the cover to form a space therein in which the tone arm can move across the records above the level ol the lower ed e of the amplifier.
2. A phonograph cabinet comprising a body1 and a cover hinged thereto, said cover being deeperat thel front than at the back and open at the front, an amplifying horn in said cover, a record carrier rotatably mounted in said cabinet body, a tone arm movable horizontally about a bearing, a standard at one back corner of lthe cabinet for supporting said tone arm so that it'may connect with the inlet tothe horn, the upper portion of said standard being formed as the bearing about which the tone arm can move horizontally across the record, and the cover being divided diagonallyl into two triangular portions one of which is occu ied by the. amplifying horn while the other orms'a space in which the tone arm can move across the record above the level of the lower edge of the amplifier.
