Be it known that I, DONALD T. ALLEN, a

citizen of the United States, and resident of' Milwaukee, in the county of hfiilwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonographs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full., clear, and exact description thereof.

rlhis invention relates to phonographs and is in general an improvement over that disclosed in my copending application, No. 129, tiled January 2, 1925 for phonographs.

Objects of thisA invention. are to provide aV phonograph of the portable type in which a cabinet is provided withv a swinging cover, and to so construct the phonograph that it may be played with the cover either open or closed.

More specifically, objects of this invention are to provide a portable phonograph which is equipped with an outlet opening for the sound controlled by a slidable flap and to so construct the apparatus that the flap is adapted to slide upwardly and laterally out of the way of the cover and of the records carried by the cover so as to permit closing of the covei' even while tli-e phonograph isin operation.

Further objects are to provide a very simple construction which may be cheaply manufactured, and which is easy to operate.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying` drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the phonograph with the cover open, part-s of the apparatus being broken away.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a view corresponding to Figure 2 showing the phonograph in its normal closed position.

vFigure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the phonograph comprises a cover 1 hinged to the bottom portion 2 adjacent their rear edges. The bottom portion is provided with a top plate 3 spaced a material distance from the bottom plate 4. The front wall 5 of the bottoni portion is provided with an outlet aperture 6 for the sound. It is to be noted that the top plate 3 of the body portion of the phonograph is cut away to provide a pocket or channel 7 for a purpose Serial No. 53,353.

Itis to benoted particularly from Figures 2 and 3 that a slide 9 is positioned between the front edge of the member 8 and the front wall 5 of the body portion. This slide is normally carried within slots 10 formed at opposite sides of the body portion. Preferably, the slide 9y is provided' with aA pair'of lea-ther tongues 11 which constitute iieXible handles to aid in its manipulation.

It isto benoted particularly from Figure 1 that a pair of metal strips 12 are `secured to the upper face of the top plate 3 ofthe body portion. These metal strips are thus spaced a slight distance from the plate 8, as may be seen most clearly from Figure 3. It is to be noted further that the top 1 is provided with a strip 13 see Figure 3) which, when the device is closed and ready for transporting, contacts with the upper end ot the slide 9.

In using the apparatus, the cover is opened and the slide 9 is pulled upwardly by means of the handles 11 until the outwardly project-ing truniiions indicated by the reference character 14, which are carried by the slide, are in Contact with the lower edge of the metal strips 12. These metal strips may be of angle iron construction, as shown in Figure 4. The slide is tilted and slid backwardly into the space 7, until it occupies the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will be seen that in this position the slide is wholly received within the space 7 and constitutes in effect a continuation of the top plate 3. The phonograph may then be adjusted and started and the cover may be closed to eliminate any scratching sounds from the needle in a well known manner.

It will be seen, therefore, that a very simple type of portable phonograph has been provided and is so constructed that the sound delivery opening through the body portion, may be readily closed or uncovered by a movable slide.

It will be seen further that this slide, in either its 'closed position or its open position, does not interfere with the opening oi' closing of the cover, but permits the utmost freedom in its manipulation.

Vhen it is considered that the extra records are frequently carried in the cover 1,

it is apparent that the invention fulills .a long felt want in providing a slide which does not interfere with the cover in any manner whatsoever.

Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed. i

I claim:

l. A portable phonograph comprising a body portion and a cover, said body portion having a top plate provided with a cutout and having a sound outlet opening in its front wall, and a slide positioned inwardly of said front wall and adapted to be drawn upwardly to uncover said outlet opening, and adapted to be moved rearwardly into the said cutout in the top plate.`

2. A portable phonograph comprising a body portion and ai cover, said body portion having a top plate provided with a cutout and having a sound outlet opening in its front wall, a slide positioned inwardly of said front Wall and adapted to be drawn upwardly to uncover said outlet opening and adapted to be moved rearwardly into the said cutout in the top plate, and means for guiding said slide into Said cutout.

3. A portable phonograph comprising a boX-like body portion and a cover hinged thereto, said body portion having a top plate terminating short of the front wall of the body portion, a member secured to the under side of said plate and projecting into proximity to said front Wall, said front wall having a sound outlet aperture, a slide normally positioned rearwardly of said front wall and closing said aperture and having a pair of outwardly projecting trunnions at its ends adjacent its bottom, and a pair of side strips secured to the top face of said top plate and adapted to guide said trunnions, whereby said slide may be drawn upwardly and slid backwardly above said member, said trunnions being guided between said member and Said strips.
