Abstract

A method of cutting an elongate strip of wirecloth to a given length and finish the ends so as to maintain the integrity of the weave at both ends. One end of a rolled up oversize length of woven wirecloth is clamped, and the wirecloth is unrolled over a flat surface, and the far end is clamped. The unrolled length is tensioned by moving one clamp relative to the other, so as to flatten the wirecloth between the clamped ends. Parallel sided bars are positioned across the wirecloth and clamped in place adjacent the two clamped ends so that the desired final length of the strip is defined by the distance measured from the outer face of one to the outer face of the other of the two bars. The wirecloth is marked with two pairs of parallel lines using the parallel inner and outer faces of the two bars as straight edges. The bars are removed and the warp and weft wires of the cloth between each pair of parallel lines are bound together to form a solid seam to lock the weave in place between the two seams, and the wirecloth is cut along the outer of each of the pairs of lines corresponding to the outer edges of the two seams to produce the desired length of cloth. The clamping means 12 at one end is fixed and that at the opposite end is movable, towards and away from the fixed clamping means, by a pneumatic air cylinder 46. Binding the warp and weft wires to form the seams is performed by soldering or welding (preferably by electric resistance welding) or by an adhesive, between each pair of parallel lines. Further embodiments include the use of programmable computer based process control systems, and a means for suitably illuminating the surface of the cloth to permit visual inspection.
