Abstract

A dispensing container for dispensing two different flowable products one of which catalyses the other into a usable state when admixed, for example as a car body filler, comprises two flexible tubes 1, 2 for the different products arranged one within the other, and sealed to a common dispensing nozzle provided with passageways 4, 5 which independently deliver the two products either to a mixing chamber 6 in the nozzle prior to being dispensed from a single opening or to dispensing apertures lying in a plane (Figs. 3 and 4). When the tubes are depressed the fluid is simultaneously emitted from the dispensing openings. In the arrangement shown, a closure cap 9 has a dependent annulus 10, which seals the exits of passageways 5 and the chamber 8 from passageways 4. In the other arrangement (Figs 3 and 4) axial outlet passageways from the inner tube are closed by a rotatable disc having openings registrable with said passageways and the axial outlet passageways from the tubes' interspace are closed by a cap. <IMAGE>

Description

A DISPENSiNG DEVICE FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a dispensing device for dispensing two flowable materials which have to be admixed to provide the necessary useable product by chemical reaction such as a paste and hardener to produce a car body filler.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION An elastic car body filler is on the market which is sold to the consumer in two constituent parts which have to be mixed together before use.
The two parts in the form of a paste and a hardener are normally supplied in separate containers for example by means of separate flexible tubes, so that the required amounts may be squeezed out onto a non-absorbent surface and mixed to the required consistency prior to use.
This method can be messy and wasteful of time and resources.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to overcome the disadvantages of the prior art so that mixing of the component materials can be achieved by using a single dispensing device containing the two materials thereby to achieve mixing in a more controlled and accurate manner.
According to the invention there is provided a device for dispensing two flowable materials to be admixed comprising a first flexible tube for containing one flowable material, a second flexible tube within the first flexible tube for containing the other flowable material, a dispensing nozzle attached to the two flexible tubes, said nozzle having first and second passageways in communication respectively with said first and second tubes, each passageway having exit apertures for emmission therefrom of the flowable materials upon the simultaneous application of pressure to the two flexible tubes, and closure means for closing said dispensing apertures when the device is not in use.
Preferably the axis of one of the passageways is arranged transverse to the axis of the other passageway such that as the two tubes are compressed one flowable material is injected into the flow of the other flowable material such that the admixing of materials takes place prior to being dispensed from the nozzle.
In a preferred form there are a plurality of such axially arranged passageways in the nozzle with the apertures of one set of passageways being positioned upstream of the apertures of the other set of passageways.
With this embodiment the closure means is in the form of a closure cap for insertion over the mouth of the nozzle, the cap having a depending skirt portion which enters the mixing chamber and isolates the apertures of the said passageways one from the other.
In another embodiment the plurality of first and second passageways are arranged in parallel axial alignment, the apertures thereof lying in a plane forming the dispensing mouth of the nozzle. With this arrangement a cap is provided for inserting over the mouth of the nozzle to avoid premature emmisssion and contact between the two materials prior to usage.
Additionally, and advantageously, a rotating sealing disc may be provided on the nozzle, the disc having perforations which can then be aligned with the apertures of the passageways leading from the second inner tube when it is desired to dispense material.
BRIEF DESCRIIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments of the invention taken with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein; Fig 1 is a cross-sectional view of a dispensing device according to the invention with the closure cap thereof removed; Fig 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line X-X of Fig 1; Fig 3 is a cross-sectional through a dispensing device according to another embodiment of the invention with the closure cap thereof removed; and Fig 4 is a cross-sectional view along the line Y-Y of Fig 3.
BEST MODES OF PERFORMING THE INVENTION The embodiment of the invention in shown Fig 1 comprises two transparent flexible plastics tubes 1 and 2 for carrying flowable material such as a paste and a hardener therefor, one flexible tube 2 being within the other tube 1 and both being sealed to a dispensing nozzle 3.
The nozzle 3 is composed of injection moulded plastics material incorporating a radial array of outer circular passageways 4 having outlet apertures 4', in communication with the flexible tube 1, and a radial array of inner circular passageways 5 having outlet apertures 5', in communication with the flexible tube 2. The axes of the passageways 4 are parallel to the central axis A of the dispensing device, and the axes of the passageways 5 transverse thereto as shown. The apertures 5' are upstream of the apertures 4' and separated by an annular cavity C formed in the nozzle 3.
An axially directed central bore 6 is mounted in the nozzle 3 in communication with the inner tube 2 through a bell-shaped end section 7 to which the inner tube 2 is sealed. The bore 6 leads to the each of the passageways 5.
A dispensing chamber 8 for the admixed materials is formed in the nozzle 3. It will be seen that, due to the arrangement described, the material from the inner tube 2 is injected into the stream of material from the outer tube 1 as it passes the apertures 5' of passageways 5 whereby in effect the two materials become admixed and collect in the mixing chamber 8 prior to being dispensed from the mouth M of the nozzle 3.
To ensure that mixing does not occur prior to usage, and also to close the nozzle 3 when not in use, a cap 9 is provided for insertion over the mouth M.
The cap 9 has a circular depending skirt portion 10 forming a peripheral enclosure 11 with the sides 12 of the cap 9, so that upon insertion over the mouth N the skirt portion 10 closes the apertures 5' and also prevents material from the cavity C entering the mixing chamber 8.
A modified form of dispensing nozzle is shown in Figs 3 and 4. In this embodiment the nozzle 13 has a radial array of inner circular passageways 14 and outer circular passageways 15, the axes of both sets of passageways being parallel to the central axis B of the device.
The apertures 14' and 15' of the passageways 14 and 15 lie in a plane defining the dispensing mouth of the nozzle 13 as shown A sealing disc 16 is rotatably mounted in the nozzle 13, the sealing disc 16 having apertures 17 which can be brought into alignment with the apertures 14' to allow the emmission of flowable material from the tube 2 when required.
To prevent emmission from the other apertures 15' prior to usage, a flexible plastics closure cap 18 is provided which fits snugly over the dispensing mouth of the nozzle 13 as shown.
In use the cap 18 is removed and the disc 16 rotated so that its apertures 17 are in alignment with the apertures 14' from the inner tube 2. When pressure is applied to the two tubes simultaneously material will extrude from the apertures 14' and 15' admixing as it does so on a suitable non-absorbent surface which can be provided for this purpose.
When sufficient material has been expelled the face of the nozzle 13 may be wiped clean and the disc 16 rotated so as to seal off the apertures 14' from the inner tube 2 and the cap 18 is then refitted.
It will be appreciated that in both embodiments above described, the relative sizes of the passageways leading from the tubes 1 and 2 may be chosen so that the two materials are dispensed from the nozzle in predetermined correct proportions.
Alternatively, the device may be provided with the correct proportions of material in the tubes sufficient for a single application, whereafter the device may be discarded.
