Abstract

A filter press is closed by a piston (18) and cylinder (17) and the length by which the filter press pack may permissibly expand during filtering is set by adjusting abutment (24). A contact maker (20) is slidably mounted on the piston (18) to contact the abutment (24) when the filter press is closed and to actuate a switch (25) when the pack expansion causes the piston (18) to move back more than the permissible length. The switch (25), when actuated, operates a pump (27) to increase the pressure in the cylinder (17), thereby to decrease the expansion of the pack to less than the permissible length. <IMAGE>
