Abstract

A press for use in punching out portions of thin material includes a bed 10 with a work support surface and a cross head 14. Piston and cylinder units 48 act through coupled rack and pinion mechanisms 30, 32 for moving the cross head during a downward stroke in which the cross head is brought into contact with punches resting on the work. Piston and cylinder units 22 serve to apply pressure to the punches during a cutting phase which takes place at the end of the downward stroke when pressure in the hydraulic circuit increases to a predetermined level. <IMAGE>
