Abstract
A grab mechanism for handling cannisters containing nuclear fuel elements, comprises a first assembly including jaws 102 and a second assembly including locking means to maintain the jaws in an open or closed position. The first and second assemblies are relatively vertically movable and include a cam 210 and a cam follower 105 which upon said vertical movement are caused to relatively rotate and at upper and lower positions control the lock means to prevent opening and closing of the jaws. The cam, however, is so shaped that it is only at alternate couplers of up and down movement that the amplitude of the cam relative to the follower is sufficient to cause the lock means to move so as to allow the jaws to close. <IMAGE>
