Abstract

A sliding door (13) biassed in a closing direction by a closing weight (24) and retainable in any opened position by retaining means which reduce the effective weight of the closing weight (24) to an extent sufficient to prevent closing of the door by the closing weight (24) but the door being closable manually or by automatic means such as a fire detector. Preferably the retaining means comprise a compensating weight (27) coupled to the closing weight by a cable 25 via an electromagnetic (28) which can be de-energised to allow the full weight of the closing weight (24) to act on the door to close the door. <IMAGE>
