Abstract

A valve member 11 for a molten metal metering valve, includes an elongated stem 12 provided at one end with an inwardly tapering portion which, in use, co-operates with a valve seat to regulate the flow of molten metal through a valve orifice. The tapering portion is defined by a plug 15 formed separately from the stem 12 and removably secured to the stem 12, the plug 15 being composed of a material having a greater impact resistance than the material of the stem 12 at the operating temperature of the valve. The plug is attached to the stem by upsetting the end of the stem into a groove 16. When the tapering portion becomes worn, the plug 15 can be replaced without the need for replacing the entire valve member. A screw-threaded section 18 is secured to the stem at 17 by an adhesive. <IMAGE>
