Abstract
A gas operable water heater, such as a central heating boiler, has a heat exchanger 11 mounted in a flue 12 and a damper 13 positioned in the flue downstream of the exchanger is displaceable to close the flue except when the main burner 10 is to be ignited. In one embodiment Fig. 1, the damper is opened in response to a demand for heat from thermostat 1, so that gas is supplied to a pilot burner 6 and, when a flame is detected by means 8, to a main burner. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) in response to a demand for heat gas is supplied to the pilot burner and a temperature responsive means such as bimetallic strip 25, heated by the ignited pilot burner causes the damper to open the flue causing gas valve 28 to be unheated, and when a pilot flame is detected valve 9 is opened and gas is supplied to the main burner. <IMAGE>
