Abstract

This invention provides a piston and cylinder arrangement for single shot operation e.g. jettisoning a load from an aircraft. A restraining flange (18) of a copper sleeve (17) on the piston (16) abuts against a surface (20) of the cylinder (21) to prevent substantial relative axial movement between piston (16) and cylinder (21) until operation occurs e.g. by means of an explosion (10/11), whereupon the annular flange (18) shears, that part of the sleeve (17) which remains attached to the piston providing a seal between piston (16) and cylinder (21). In alternative embodiments, the flange (18) engages a recess in a non stepped portion of the cylinder (21), or a non attached ring engages recesses in both the cylinder and piston. <IMAGE>
