Abstract

A piston and piston ring assembly for use in a reciprocating engine alleviates cylinder wear by partially balancing outward fluid pressure on the piston ring. The piston ring assembly comprises an outwardly biassed piston ring 4 accommodated in the piston groove 3, the bottom side of which groove sloping upwards in radial outward direction. Instead of the sloping groove bottom or in combination therewith, the piston ring assembly may be equipped with an inwardly biassed sealing ring 5 located at the pressure side of the piston ring. <IMAGE>
