Aerostats; aerial machines with aerostats.-The aerostat of an air-ship comprises a longitudinal series of rows of compartments, each row consisting of a central chamber A<1>, Fig. 1, for the buoyant gas, a chamber B<2> for an inert gas such as nitrogen, and lateral chambers D, which are divided by longitudinal flexible partitions a<1>, b<1>, into three parts A<2>, B<1>, C. The parts A<2>, B<1> communicate freely with the chambers A<1>, B<2> respectively. The part C is filled with air by a pump and is provided with a relief valve. The gases in the chambers A<1>, B<2> expand into the compartments A<2>, B<1> whereby loss of these gases is prevented during rising or an increase in temperature. The loss of buoyant gas by diffusion is reduced to a minimum by the arrangement of the chambers containing nitrogen around the chamber A'. The nitrogen also reduces the danger of an explosion. In a modified form, the chamber 1, Fig. III, contains the buoyant gas, the chambers 2, 3, 6, 7 contain nitrogen, and the chambers 4, 5 form the air ballonets. The propeller may be used for vertical steering to avoid the use of ballast.
