Associating, cutting, and delivery apparatus.- In machines for associating, folding, and cutting paper wherein a plurality of webs, or strips cut from wide webs, are superposed, folded longitudinally, and cut transversely to form bundles, notepaper sections, book signatures, &c. cutters are provided whereby the webs are trimmed or the strips cut of graduated widths so that the edges of the bundles &c. are flush with one another. As shown, six webs b<1> - - b<6> pass between pairs of tension rollers c<1> - - c<6> and feedrollers d<1> - d<6> to rotary cutters e<1> - - e<6> which divide the webs into three strips, and are so spaced apart that the strips are cut in graduated widths. The strips, which are aligned by guides f<1> - - f<6> comprising depending fingers adjustably mounted on cross-rods, are passed over tension rollers g<1> - - g<6>, and are associated in superposition between pressure rollers g. The associated strips are then folded longitudinally by triangular plates h<3>, guides 6 commencing the fold. Subsequently the folded strips are squeezed between vertical pressure rollers j<3>, turned to the horizontal by plates k<1> with upturned edges 7, and then passed between horizontal pressure rollers m to a transverse cutting device. The latter comprises a stationary knife n and a coacting rotary member o carrying knives o<1>, o<2>, or a guillotine may be used. The bundles are received by cranked fingers p carried by a shaft q mounted in blocks r vertically slidable in slots s, the blocks being raised against the action of springs t by cams v on a shaft x engaging bowls u<1> carried by links u pivoted to the shaft q and slotted to engage fixed stops 3; the shaft is thus partially rotated, and the fingers p also pass between travelling tapes z and deliver the bundles thereto. Instead of slitting wide webs the required number of narrow webs may be drawn from separate reels.
