Abstract

1369891 Folding and cutting webs WESTVACO CORP 20 June 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 28867/72 Heading B8R A zigzag folder for a web W, Fig. 1, comprises two pairs of chains 3a, 3b, running on adjacent closed paths and each carrying at least two grippers 36 and two tuckers 35, arranged so that a gripper on one chain pair is aligned with a tucker on the other chain pair in the zone A, so that the tucker pushes the web into the gripper to form a crease, alternate creases being of opposite sense. Each gripper comprises two elastomer jaw elements 62, Fig. 3, attached to adjacent links so as to be opened when the links are on a curved part of the path. Rollers 34 have recesses 38 to accommodate the rollers 37 of the chains to prevent opening of the grippers at that point. The web is deposited in zigzag form in a hopper 9. If it is desired to cut the web into separate lengths along some of the crease lines after folding, there is associated with the folder a cutter comprising reciprocating tables 41a, 41b, carrying blades 43a, Figs. 1 and 6, 43b, and co-operating roller cutter units 42a, 42b. In operation, to cut along the crease line between web sections W 4 and W 5 , the roller cutter unit 42a is raised to operative position, the knife 43a is advanced to grip the web between it and the rollers 44, and the rollers 44 are moved across the web on a chain 46. Reverse creases are cut by the blade 43b and roller unit 42b. The web may alternatively be cut into separate lengths before folding, by rotary cutters 17, 18, Fig. 12, cutting two webs supplied from separate rolls 10, 11, the cutters being synchronized so that where the sheets come to a common path 21 the gaps between pairs of sheets from the two sources are staggered. A tucker on the right-hand chains engages the gap between a pair of sheets from roll 10, and the mid-line of a sheet from roll 11, so that at each fold line the outer sheet is folded round a gap between the inner sheets. The roller cutter units, Fig. 6, may be replaced by units wherein the rollers are frustums of cones and the roller assembly is oblique to the blade 43a, or by a segmental cutter 86, Fig. 10, which rolls against the blade when a pin is moved in a slot 88. The blade edge may be undulating to produce scalloped edges. Specifications 1,369,892 and 1,369,893 are referred to.
