Abstract

1525863 Vinyl chloride polymer blends and foams thereof STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 16 Sept 1975 37997/75 Headings C3C C3L and C3M Dry blends of a vinyl chloride emulsion resin and a nucleating resin in which each nucleating resin particle is centrally positioned and is in contact with and surrounded by a plurality of dispersion resin particles, the nucleating resin being an agglomerated vinyl chloride emulsion resin or a vinyl chloride suspension resin which was blended in the form of a wet cake having a water content of 25-50%, may be prepared by (a) mixing an aqueous latex of emulsion resin particles with a plurality of nucleating resin particles which are agglomerated vinyl chloride emulsion resin particles in the form of a dry powder or wet cake or vinyl chloride suspension resin in the form of a wet cake of water content 25-50%, the total resin solids content of the resulting mixture being 30 to 75 weight per cent, and (b) drying the resulting wet blend in the absence of sufficient shear to cause coagulation so as to obtain the blend in the form of a dry powder. The nucleating resin particles may be prepared by heating emulsion resin particles in the presence of a small proportion of solvent, e.g. a ketone or alkanol, or by spray drying a latex at a temperature below that at which the particles are permanently bound. The products may be dispersed in plasticizers to form plastisols, and may include blowing agents, e.g. azodicarbonamide, to give foam products. The compositions may be used for coating, moulding and casting and to form bottle cap liners.
