Abstract
1355905 Foamable fibre-reinforced thermoplastic resins DART INDUSTRIES Inc 27 March 1972 [9 April 1971] 14185/72 Heading C3C A foamable thermoplastic composition comprises a physical mixture of (A) 85-99% by wt. of particles of a thermoplastic resin containing reinforcing fibres dispersed therein and (B) 15-1% by wt. of particles of a thermoplastic resin containing a heat decomposable blowing agent which has a decomposition time exceeding the flow time of resin (A) at any temperature which is above the m.p. of resin (A) and the decomposition point of the blowing agent, resin (B) being flowable at a temperature below the decomposition point of the blowing agent. In the examples the fibres were of glass; resin (A) was polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, poly- (monochlorostyrene) or polypropylene; resin (B) was a styrene-butadiene block copolymer polyethylene or polypropylene and polyisobutylene; and the blowing agent was-p-toluene sulphonyl semicarbazide with optionally azodicarbonamide. The fibres and blowing agent were incorporated into the respective resins in an extruder, the compounded resins were extruded into strands and severed into pellets which were then mixed together to form the compositions which were then extruded or injection moulded at a temperature sufficient to activate the blowing agent and produce a foam. Other preferred foamable compositions comprised (A) glass fibres and polyphenylene oxide, polysulphone, polycarbonate or nylon; and (B) trihydrazinotriazine as blowing agent and polystyrene, acrylonitrile-polybutadiene-styrene polymer, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer or nylon. During foaming of the composition the fibres tend to reorient themselves tangentially to the walls of the cells and the moulded articles have a non-porous surface.
