Abstract
1520242 Desulphurizing coal ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 27 May 1977 [27 May 1976] 22533/77 Heading C5G The pyritic sulphur content of coal is reduced by contacting an aqueous coal slurry at elevated temperature with oxygen, maintaining the aqueous slurry at a pH of from 5.5 to 12.0 during the contacting and separating water containing dissolved sulphur compounds from the coal particles. The pH may be maintained by addition of alkali (e.g. hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates), or by addition of buffering agents (e.g. sodium acetate). The temperature may be 150 to 350‹F. The oxygen may be at a pressure of 50 to 500 p.s.i.g. and may contain inert gas.
