Abstract
1492600 Desulphurizing coal OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 12 Nov 1974 [2 Jan 1974] 49021/74 Heading ClA Coal (as defined) is treated to produce a carbon char of low sulphur content by conversion of the coal into char by heating at a temperature not exceeding about 870 C., leaching the sulphur from the resulting char by treating in a liquid alkali system, e.g. comprising sodium or potassium hydroxide, calcium oxide or sodium carbonate or mixtures thereof, and thence separating desulphurized char from the system. Preferably the alkali system is a bath comprising a mixture of equal amounts by weight of NaOH and KOH with a weight ratio of the alkali system to the char of at least three. Usually the desulphurized char is allowed to collect on the surface of a bath comprising the alkali system and thereafter separated. Conversion to char is preferably effected by heating in the absence of or with restricted access to oxygen.
