1431145 Inoculants for Fe or Ni base alloys INST PROBLEM LITYA AKAD NAUK UKRAINSK SSR 13 May 1974 21098/74 Headings C7A and C7D An inoculant for iron-or nickel-based alloys consists of 3-25% by volume of one or more of the nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides, borides and oxides of Ti, Zr, Ta, Hf and Th produced in the matrix and dispersed therein as particles not more than 5 Ám in size, the matrix being Fe-or Ni-based and consisting of 0-10% total of one or more rare earth metals, 0-50% total of one or more of Mn, Mo and Si, and the balance being Fe or Ni. The inoculant may be made by heating a melt of the matrix alloy above the formation temperature of the high melting point compounds adding the elements to form the compounds in substantially stoichiometric proportions and cooling the melt at 10<SP>2</SP> to 10<SP>7</SP> C/sec. Examples show inoculating Ni-base alloys or Cu-Ni steels.
