1425359 Sorting and counting coins UNIVERSAL MACHINE CO Inc 8 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 51787/73 Heading G4X In a centrifugal coin sorter, coins of random denomination are deposited in bulk through a hopper 26 on to the central portion 16 of a rotatably driven disc assembly, an outer annular portion 38 of which has sorting means for arresting the outward movement of coins under centrifugal force at different radial positions depending on the coin denomination. In the embodiment described, the sorting means comprise radial, tapered channels 46 cut in the underside of the annular disc portion 38 which revolves with the central portion 16 above a stationary table assembly 4, 60. A sector of the table has apertures at different radial and angular positions to receive coins of different denominations and transmit them through shoots 110 into receptacles 112. A stationary cam 70 lifts coins over a barrier ring 50 and is located with respect to the sector of the table 4 having the coin shoot apertures (78) (Fig. 2, not shown) so that only one coin is directed into a channel 46 per revolution of the disc. Coins are deflected from the channels 46 by fingers 82 and are counted by a photo-cell when a light beam is interrupted. Each aperture (78) has two coin receptacles with means for directing coins to one or the other as the count reaches a desired number (Fig. 5, not shown). Coins are prevented from piling up on each other by a shear ring 30 and weighted rods 130 adjacent the barrier 50 which allow a single layer only to reach it. The cam 70 is lowered by an eccentric cam arrangement 75, 76 when the speed of rotation is not high enough for coins to reach their correct position in a channel 46 before the channel crosses the appropriate table aperture (78) for that coin, e.g. during starting and stopping.
