Abstract

1407095 Strapping articles FMC CORP 11 Sept 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 42056/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] Strapping apparatus has rollers 34, 36 to feed a polypropylene polyester or nylon strap around a yoke 20 to a stop 19 on an anvil 18, and a flag 70 to sense the formation of a loop of the strap at the roller 36 after the end of the strap has engaged the stop, the flag actuating a switch 72 to cause a gripper 30 to grip the strap end against the anvil and to reverse the rollers 34, 36 to remove the loop. Manual actuation of another switch causes further reverse driving of the rollers to pull the strap out of resiliently mounted plates (244, 245, Fig. 17, not shown) in the yoke and to tension it around an article. The reverse driving continues until the removal of stack in the chain driving roller 36 causes an idler sprocket to actuate a limit switch. The bight of the strap is then gripped between the anvil and a gripper 32 and a composite cam member (190, Fig. 6, not shown) is moved to cause a tongue 24 between the strap end and the bight to pivot away and to be replaced by a pivotal electrically heated blade. A platen 26 is also raised to cut the bight and, after removal of the blade, resiliently to press the strap ends together. The grippers 30, 32 are released and on reverse movement of the cam member the anvil is pivoted out of the way to release the joined strap. The apparatus is pneumatically operated.
