Abstract

1371274 Seaming non-metallic sheet material IKEGAI TEKKO KK 9 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 37149/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A strapping machine comprises a press member incorporating a heater to soften a plastics band to be joined while pressing two parts of the band uniformly the press member being oscillatably mounted on a base section of the machine. As shown, a package a is strapped with a band b of plastics material which is drawn from a reel 15 and the free ends of the strap are welded under heat and pressure before separation from the material on the reel. The strapping material is fed from the reel through a passage 26 on a press member 23 by operation of a lever 16 and is passed by hand over a clip 58 beneath a table 52 to anchor the free end of the material by further operation of the lever 16. The feed of the material is continued to form a loop over the table 52, into which the package a is then placed. Further operation of the lever 16 then causes the direction of feed to tighten the material about the package after which the reel is clamped by a magnetic brake 21 on its shaft. A motor (36), Fig. 6A (not shown), is then started by operation of a switch (82) in an electric circuit, Fig. 10 (not shown), to move the press-member 23 anticlockwise to disengage the band b from a groove 24 on the press-member, Fig. 13, which raises a lever 43 carried by the press-member so that a heater 37 carried on the lever 43 is applied to the two sections b<SP>1</SP> and b<SP>11</SP> of the band which are then pressed together by a press surface 25 of the press-member 23. As the press-member reaches the end of its travel, a lever (61) which is oscillated by a cam (35) driven by the motor (36), releases the clip 58 and the table 52 from the loop, which action temporarily increases the tension in the band causing it to break off close to the sealed sections. The press member then moves back to its original position and the other parts return to their original positions.
