[Class 45] [Also in Group XVII] A machine for binding packages with metal ties comprises means for feeding. the binding material so that it can be passed around the package and means for clamping the forward end of the material and 'for reversing the feed so as to tighten the tie. The binding strip F is. fed from a reel 1 by rollers 2, 3. 4 which may be driven in either direction by pulleys 5, 6 alternatively coupled to a driving shaft 22 by clutches 23, 26 and 24, 27. In operation, a pedal 34 is depressed to start the feed by engaging the clutch 23, 26 and the leading end of the strip is taken through the slot A in the table, around the package and between an anvil 7 and sliding bolt 8. The pedal is released, and the bolt is moved to clamp the tie by a handle 9, which also by means of a lever 37 shifts a link 33 along a slot 36 so that further depression of the pedal 34 engages the clutch 24, 27 to reverse the feed and tighten the tie. The axes of the rollers 4, 3 are disposed in a horizontal-slot 54 and a vertical slot 55 respectively to enable a strong pull to be obtained. The actuation of a handle 42 withdraws a stop 43 to release a spring-controlled pawl 59 carried by a crank plate 44 loose on the shaft 22, so that a boss 56 on the pawl falls into a notch 58 and clutches the crank plate to the shaft for one revolution until the pawl again strikes the stop 43. A sliding cam 45 which is thereby reciprocated lifts a pair of clamps 14, 17 which hold the sealing strip S and the binding strip F while knives 15, 16 operate to cut the strips. The length thus cut from the sealing strip is lifted and pressed around the overflapping ends of the tie by a pair of sliding members operated by the continued movement of the cam 45. The return of the cam 45 controls a pawl 52 to feed forward the sealing strip S in readiness for the next sealing operation. As the crank plate completes its rotation, a cam 41 strikes the lever 37 and returns the link 33 to its normal position.
